Insulate Hampshire community DIY project gives away enough insulation to cover ten football pitches

10-09-2012

The last six months have been a whirlwind of Community DIY events for the Insulate Hampshire team who, with support from local community groups have hosted an impressive 14 events countywide since March.

September 1st marked an impressive achievement as Insulate Hampshire and local community group Energy Alton, gave away 297 rolls bringing the total amount of rolls distributed through the programme so far to 5071.  That’s enough DIY loft insulation rolls to cover a whopping ten football pitches! And collectively, 62,590kg of CO2 has been saved through the community DIY scheme so far.

The DIY loft insulation rolls are given away completely free of charge, and used to ‘top up’ existing insulation in householders’ lofts.  It’s estimated to help reduce fuel bills by an estimated £50 a year.

Due to the success of the Community DIY project, a total of 569 Hampshire residents will be able to enjoy a more comfortable home and lower energy bills. And with a further ten events in the diary there is still plenty of scope for householders to benefit from the project.

Insulate Hampshire works in partnership with Hampshire County Council and the 11 Districts across Hampshire with funding from ScottishPower to offer cavity wall and loft insulation free of charge to homeowners and private renters within the Hampshire region, where less than 2 ½ inches of loft insulation currently exists*. However properties with more than 2 ½ inches of existing loft insulation are unable to benefit from this offer.  For this reason, the partnerships between Insulate Hampshire and the community groups were formed to create a community DIY offer whereby householders can do it themselves for free by collecting from a central location.

Erin Mills, Community Coordinator at Insulate Hampshire explains “A lot of work goes in to managing and organising the events and the support from the community groups is very valuable and greatly appreciated.  The atmosphere at the events is great and when that huge pile of insulation is gone at the end of it I can breathe a huge sigh of relief.’’

There are a number of ongoing events taking place throughout the county up until the end of November, to find out when your local event is taking place email diy@insulatehampshire or visit www.insulatehampshire.co.uk
